Overview
The Forest Landscape Restoration Project in the Philippines project (FLR Project) aimed to improve ecological and rural development goals through large-scale community-based reforestation.
The project activities included nursery establishment, tree planting trials, soil fertility studies, pest and disease dynamics, agroforestry experiments, alternative livelihood trials, socioeconomic assessments, capacity-building, and an international conference on FLR.
The project produced 3 frameworks for designing and monitoring FLR interventions: the community-capacity curve, the intermediate outcomes approach, and the monitoring system for tree-planting activities.
The project also revealed several barriers and opportunities for social inclusion in FLR, such as the need to incentivise young people, the presence of land claimants, the role of women, and the potential of private-sector partnerships.
The project generated significant outputs and impacts, such as 6 postgraduate degrees, 25 peer-reviewed papers, various extension materials, a follow-up system for DENR, and a new 30-year project that adopts the FLR Project’s practices for carbon sequestration and nature-based solutions.
